The abdominal vasculature is now relatively easy to image with the latest ultrasound technology. Aortoiliac and renal arterial studies are routinely performed in our Laboratory.

We have a high accuracy rate for predicting aneurysmal and occlusive disease of the aorto-iliac segment of over 90%. With abdominal aortic aneurysm the precise location, (infrarenal or suprarenal) is extremely important to the vascular surgeon. We also routinely assess the iliac, femoral and popliteal arteries for aneurysms, which occur more frequently in the presence of abdominal aortic aneurysm.

Indications:

Renal duplex

  • Renal failure
  • Follow up post surgery
  • Hypertension (refractory to medical management)
  • Hypertension (new onset)
  • Patient who is outside the normal age range for hypertension.
  • Screen for renal artery stenosis prior to management with some anti hypertensive drugs, such as ACE inhibitors .

Mesenteric arterial duplex

  • Abdominal pain and cramping associated with eating
  • Diarrhoea
  • Significant unexplained weight loss
  • Abdominal bruits
  • Unexplained GIT symptoms
  • Post op evaluation

Aortoiliac duplex

  • Hip or buttock claudication
  • Diminished femoral pulses
  • Emboli resulting in ischaemic digits (to determine the source)
  • Monitoring of aorto-iliac arterial reconstruction
  • Pulsatile abdominal mass
  • Abdominal bruit
  • Bilateral leg pain or weakness

IVC & iliac vein

  • bilateral or unilateral lower extremity oedema with patent deep veins
  • Uni or bilateral DVT to level of inguinal crease (to evaluate extent of proximal obstruction)
  • suspected Budd-Chiari syndrome
  • suspected ovarian vein incompetence
